Inside final trail of slain Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo in Nairobi CBD
Highly placed sources have tipped NTV that top security officials in Parliament are frantically trying to unearth leads and links to the criminals who shot Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Ong’ondo Were, as well as establish when they began trailing the legislator.
The late Were’s driver was called by the bodyguard at 7:15 pm to go and drive the second-term MP home.
Nine minutes later, at 7:24 pm, they left the Parliament precincts and drove along Parliament Road. They then turned right onto City Hall Way, proceeded to the Supreme Court roundabout, and turned left onto Wabera Street.
While on this road, the MP alighted from his vehicle and went into an M-Pesa shop to withdraw some cash. Shortly after, they drove onto Kenyatta Avenue, turned left, and continued to the end of the road. They then joined Valley Road, proceeding up to the City Mortuary roundabout, where the hitmen emerged and headed straight to where the MP’s vehicle had stopped at the traffic lights. The assassins shot him multiple times before disappearing into the darkness.
The driver and bodyguard, who were not hurt, rushed the bleeding and writhing MP to Nairobi Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries upon arrival.
Detectives are now following this trail to establish the exact point at which the assassins began trailing the slain MP—was it immediately after he exited Parliament, or somewhere in the CBD? They are also seeking to identify the assassins and the motorcycle used in the attack.
The bodyguard and driver were taken to Kilimani Police Station for questioning and statement-taking, with suspicions mounting as to how the assailants, despite knowing the MP had an armed bodyguard, did not attack him or factor in that the guard could have opened fire in defence.
Whereas the Interior Ministry and the National Police Service stated that the MP was ambushed and shot at 7:30 pm, evidence reveals a contrasting timeline. The slain lawmaker left Parliament at 7:24 pm, passed through the CBD to run an errand, then joined Kenyatta Avenue, passed Nyayo House roundabout, and the State House Road, Kenyatta Avenue intersection, which typically has traffic, before crossing Silver Springs Hotel roundabout and reaching City Mortuary roundabout, where the attack occurred.
Fellow lawmakers say the MP had publicly raised concerns about his safety, stating that his life was in danger.
The Nairobi Hospital Accident and Emergency wing was cordoned off for several hours until the MP’s body was moved to the morgue, as detectives began their investigations in earnest.
Were’s vehicle was taken to Kilimani Police Station, with homicide detectives visiting the scene. They returned on Thursday morning to continue collecting evidence.
