Matatu Sacco introduces alcohol breath tests to ensure sober drivers
In an effort to improve road safety and adherence to rules and regulations, NENO Sacco, a matatu Sacco in Embu has implemented alcohol breath tests for its drivers.
Before each matatu leaves the station, the driver must undergo an alcohol test, and only those who register zero alcohol levels are permitted to drive to the next destination.
According to Richard Njeri, the chairman of the Sacco’s disciplinary committee, the measure is intended to reduce accidents caused by drunk and reckless driving, a leading cause of fatalities on the roads.
Njeri stated that since the introduction of the alcohol blows, the Sacco has seen a significant increase in discipline and customer satisfaction.
“Everywhere we operate, there is a disciplinary committee as one of the measures we have put in place to keep the sacco sane. These practices aid in lifesaving, particularly during this festive season. Compliance is our daily bread,” Njeri said.
Drivers who are found to be drunk are usually suspended for six months and must reapply for their job.
Renson Njiru, a member of the Sacco, emphasized the importance of road safety to the organization, stating that any injuries or fatalities caused by drunk or dangerous driving are a significant loss.
“Those who are found to be intoxicated typically face a six-month suspension and must reapply. Before we purchased alcoblow, we had a problem with drunk drivers. We have seen a change thanks to this device,” Njiru said.
The Sacco has also called on other public transport institutions to implement self-regulation measures in order to achieve zero loss of life due to accidents.
Njiru believes that if all stakeholders take the issue seriously, there will be a higher level of order on the roads.
