Governor Anne Waiguru sets up GBV desks in public health centres
Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has established Gender-Based Violence (GBV) desks in all public health facilities in the county to provide fast and effective help to those in need.
The desks will be managed by GBV champions who have been trained to handle cases of violence against women. The governor has also promised to extend the supply of free sanitary towels to school girls and young mothers.
County Executive Committee Member for Gender and Youth Millicent Nyawira, representing the governor, encouraged women to seek help at the GBV desks whenever they have an issue.
Nyawira said that the county government is working with the justice system to expedite GBV cases’ resolution. Last year, the government distributed around 28,000 sanitary towels to school girls and young mothers.
The initiative aims to help school girls remain in class and improve their education outcomes. Nyawira emphasized that when women succeed, the entire community benefits, and urged society to embrace equity and give women opportunities.
“This initiative by governor Waiguru ensured those in school remain in class and by so doing we empowered them to succeed in their education. When women succeed, the entire community succeeds,” she said.
During the International Women’s Day event at Kerugoya County Referral Hospital, women admitted at the facility received gift hampers from the governor.
The County Assembly Committee on Medical Service, Public Health, and Sanitation commended ongoing reforms at public health facilities in Kirinyaga, particularly the roll-out of the Health Management Information System (HMIS) in all service points to complete patients’ treatment chain.
Committee Chairman Dr. Isaiah Mbogo praised the hospital’s management for ensuring adequate drug and food supplies for patients. The HMIS has helped public hospitals in Kirinyaga county address drug shortages by providing real-time information on stock outs.
The system, which was piloted at the referral hospital, has enabled the facility to maintain a constant supply of medicine.
County Executive Committee Member for Medical Services, Public Health, and Sanitation George Karoki credited ongoing reforms at medical facilities with improving service delivery and increasing the number of patients seeking treatment in public facilities. The committee expressed its support for the governor’s continued efforts to improve the county’s health system.
