3 people die after consuming illicit drink in Mbeere North, Embu County
Three people died after consuming illcit brew on Saturday in Cianyi Mbeere North, Embu County.
Two of the three people died on Saturday, September 24, 2022, in the evening, while one died later that night.
Residents in the neighborhood complained that consumption of the deadly brew was common in the area because the local authorities had let down their guard and failed to impose harsh measures against the brewers of the killer drinks.
Geoffrey Kiringa Ruku, MP for Mbeere North, said he had visited the area to assess the situation and condemned the producers and dealers of the poisonous drink known as Santa King. Ruku stated that he was aware that the producers were collaborating with some dishonest senior police officers in Siakago.
“It is very unfortunate that three people have reportedly died, a couple of others have lost sight and several others are fighting for their lives in hospitals after drinking illicit brew at Cianyi shopping Centre, Siakago, in Nthawa Ward, Mbeere North,” he said.
Ruku alleged that the OCS in the region also owns two bars and stocks the illegal brew.
“We are calling on the County Police Commandant, the OCPD and other relevant security personnel and agencies to immediately take the necessary steps to arrest and take to court the criminals killing our people by producing and distributing the killer brew,” Ruku added.
Ann Mitema, Deputy County Commissioner for Mbeere North, assured residents that police had initiated an inquiry to determine the true state of the situation.
