COP27: Making connections in Egypt

Our flight landed at the Cairo International airport at 1 am. It is a large impressive airport with moving walkways. We have a long layover as our connecting flight to Sharm el Sheikh is at 8 am.

Many international airports have free WiFi which can keep you occupied as you wait for the next flight but at this airport, we can’t get a connection.

My colleague Zeynab and I decide to get breakfast in the morning at a cafe in the airport. It has a good view of the planes landing and the sun rising.

We are joined by two travellers at our table. They are very friendly and ask where we are from. Miya and Ramji are Nepali and are travelling to the cop in Sharm.

Miya is a journalist. He opens his laptop to work but realizes there is no internet.

“In Kathmandu, we have free internet even in a Tea Kiosk,” he says as he holds out an imaginary cup.

Now that none of us is distracted by our devices, we proceed to have delightful conversations.

I have never met anyone from Nepal and am curious about what their passport looks like.

It is written both in Roman and Nepali letters. On the first page, there is a bird that looks like a peacock which Miya explains to me is called a danfe, the national bird of Nepal.

He opens my passport and notices it also has wildlife in the pages. “We have buffalo too” he points out. I explain to him that our buffaloes are very different from their docile Asian relatives. Ours is the cape buffalo, a wild and dangerous animal.

“You have the two-horned rhino I see,” he exclaims as he opens another page. This is a surprising description for me as I had never heard it described like that. He explains that they also have about 300 hundred of the greater one-horned rhino back in Nepal.

We also talk of the common challenges both our countries are facing because of melting glaciers in both the Himalayas and Mt Kenya and how it is affecting the people who rely on them.

As we are talking, we get a notification that our flight is boarding. We part and make plans to meet at the COP in Sharm.

So not having internet at the airport might not be so wet after all. We all learnt a lot about people and places we had not known about before. Not everything is on the internet and it is much more interesting to learn from other people. The internet in Egypt is not the best but that is OK. If the net is not working at the airport,  it’s OK. Just do what people used to do before the era of the internet and mobile devices, and make your own connection. You can learn much more and make new friends from faraway lands.
