Kenya shilling could finally be finding a new footing
The Kenyan shilling may finally be finding a new footing as volatility has eased, while spreads over commercial bank dollar rates have narrowed significantly.
According to Nation Media Group’s tracking of the dollar rates offered by four banks namely Equity, NCBA, I&M and Stanbic the spread, which is the difference between the dollar buying and selling rates, has narrowed to an average of just 5.8 units compared to 10.4 units in April.
While spreads had previously widened by as much as 16 units, the narrowing of the spread range comes barely a month after CBK Governor Kamau Thugge told MPs that he had written to 10 major banks asking them to explain why spreads had remained wide despite interbank reforms.
Meanwhile, the rate of change of the Kenyan shilling against the US dollar, as measured by the Central Bank of Kenya’s indicative rates, has narrowed to just 1% so far in November, down from 4.3% in March.
