President William Ruto assumes office in spectacular ceremony at Kasarani

At 12:45pm on Tuesday, September 13, Dr. William Ruto officially took his oath of office to become the country’s fifth president in accordance with the constitution.

In the presence of outgoing President Uhuru Kenyatta, Chief Justice Martha Koome, Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Muilu, and over 60,000 Kenyans at Moi Sports Center Kasarani, President-elect Ruto took and signed the oath of allegiance to the office of President and the oath of due execution of the functions of the office of president.

“I William Samoei Ruto swear that I will truly and diligently serve the people and the republic of Kenya in the office of president of the Republic of Kenya. That I will diligently discharge my duties and perform my functions in the office of the president of Kenya. And that I will do justice to all in accordance with this constitution as by law established and the laws of Kenya, without fear, favour affection, or ill will,” swore Ruto.

President Ruto also signed the certificate of inauguration. The documents were also signed by Chief Justice Martha Koome and sealed with the seal of the Judiciary.

Deputy President-elect Rigathi Gachagua also similarly took his oath as administered by the Chief Registrar of the Judiciary Ann Amadi. There was a moment of confusion when Gachagua read something different from what Ms Amadi said out loud. The matter was sorted out and the oath was retaken.

“I Rigathi Gachagua do swear that I will always truly and diligently serve the people and the Republic of Kenya in the office of Deputy President. That I will diligently discharge my duties and perform my functions in the said office to the best of judgement and that I will at all times when so required faithfully and truly give my counsel and advice to the President of the Republic of Kenya. That I will do justice to all without fear, favour affection, or ill will, and that I will not directly or indirectly such matters as shall come to my knowledge in the discharge of my duties and commit it to my secrecy,” swore Gachagua.

He too signed the oath of allegiance to the office of Deputy President and the oath of due execution of the functions of the office of Deputy President as well as his inauguration ceremony.

The briefcase containing all the signed oaths and certificates was handed over to the Head of Public Service, Dr Joseph Kinyua by Ms Amadi.

Outgoing President Uhuru Kenyatta handed over the instruments of power to President William Ruto. The first is the constitution of the Republic of Kenya and the other Presidential Ceremonial Sword.

The Ceremonial Sword makes President William Ruto the new Commander in Chief of Defense Forces. Kenya Navy had a 21-gun salute for their new Commander-in-Chief.

The event began with the outgoing President Uhuru Kenyatta inspecting a full parade mounted by the Kenya Defence Forces under Lt-Col Gilbert Kinanga’s command.

Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, Tanzania’s Samia Suluhu Hassan, Paul Kagame (Rwanda), Evariste Ndayishimiye (Burundi), Salva Kiir (South Sudan) and Felix Tshisekedi (Democratic Republic of Congo) were among the Heads of State who witnessed the momentous event.

Others are; Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Djibouti leader Ismael Guelleh, Somalia’s Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Intergovernmental Authority on Development (Igad) Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu and African Union Commission chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat.

Ghanaian President Nana Akuffo Addo, Seychelle’s Wavel Ramkalawan, Azali Assoumani of Comoros, Zimbabwe’s Emmerson Mnangagwa, Filipe Nyusi of Mozambique, South Africa’s Deputy President David Mabuza, and Sudan’s Sovereignty Council Member Ibrahim Jaber were also present.

Also Republic of Congo President Denis Sassou Nguesso, Nigeria Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Gabonese Prime Minister Rose Raponda, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita did not miss.
