‘Kadzora’ delicacy: Kilifi’s roasted rat cuisine
Kilifi is famous for its white sandy beaches and vibrant coastal culture. However, among its lesser-known traditions is a peculiar delicacy that may surprise both visitors and locals alike: the preparation and consumption of roasted rodents, locally known as kadzora.
For generations, certain communities in Kilifi have turned to rodents, specifically rats, as a reliable source of protein—a survival skill passed down through the ages and celebrated as part of their heritage.
“Eating rodents has been part of our lives. It’s something our grandparents taught us, and it’s a skill we pass down. It’s part of the Chonyi or Mijikenda culture,” says Joseph Sanga from Kilifi, who believes the tradition holds significant cultural value.
The preparation process typically involves carefully cleaning and roasting the rodents over an open flame, which locals believe enhances flavor and removes potential health risks.
However, Dr. Ghalib Salim from the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital (CGTRH) raises concerns about the biological and health implications associated with consuming rodents.
“Rodents are not meant to be eaten. Any meat that is to be consumed needs to be inspected. Consuming unverified meat poses health risks, as rodents are known carriers of pathogens and may be contaminated,” Dr. Ghalib warns.
For many Kilifi residents who enjoy this delicacy, the tradition isn’t just about sustenance; it’s about preserving their cultural identity.
