Change of the guard as reshuffled ministers hand over
The change of leadership and responsibilities in three ministries has seen outgoing Cabinet Secretaries passing the torch to their successors following President William Ruto’s cabinet reshuffle.
The ministries involved in the handover Wednesday were Trade, Tourism and Wildlife and the East African Community, ASALS and East African Development.
Speaking during the handing over of the ministry to Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano at the NSSF building, former CS for Trade and Investment Moses Kuria said he had delivered during his 11 months at the helm of the ministry.
“That’s why there’s never a post, there’s never an order, there’s never a post office, so the work continues, the government exists in perpetuity. There is never a comma, a pause or a full stop. I am very happy with the work I have done since I took over from Betty Maina 11 months ago, gradually, when we were here, I actually had to drop the old vision and myself and my team worked long hours to be able to give this country a new direction in terms of economic people,” he said.
Mr Kuria said he had redesigned the work of the ministry and given it a new direction.
One of his main concerns was the significant decline in the manufacturing sector, which has fallen from 9 per cent to 7 per cent of GDP. Exports had also fallen from 28 per cent to 10 per cent and foreign direct investment (FDI) had stagnated at around $400 million.
“This resulted in a large trade deficit, with Kenya importing $20 billion worth of goods and services while exporting only $6 billion, creating a trade imbalance of $14 billion,” he said.
He said his government’s efforts had led to the establishment of County Agricultural Industrial Parks in 32 of Kenya’s 47 counties, which would help increase production and create jobs in every corner of the country.
“There are critical trade negotiations with the United States, European Union, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, Indonesia and South Korea, which underscores the importance of expanding investment sources and partnerships,” Mr Kuria said.
Ms Miano who is coming from the East African Community, and Asals docket handed over to the former Cabinet Secretary for Tourism, Wildlife and Heritage, Peninah Malonza.
“I am confident that under Peninah’s leadership, our shared vision for a stronger East African Community will continue to flourish and evolve.
“May there be good stories to tell about my successor during her tenure in this ministry, and may you be the cause of that happening. As you strive to do so, remember that your own story will be part of the larger story and I implore you to write about this wonderful space that we have occupied together for almost a year now,” she added.
Another ministry handed over today was the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife to Alfred Mutua.
On Wednesday evening, President William Ruto reshuffled eight members of his Cabinet, folding the Foreign Affairs portfolio into the Cabinet Secretary’s Office headed by Musalia Mudavadi.
Mr Mudavadi will now also be the Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Diaspora Affairs after Alfred Mutua was moved to Tourism and Wildlife.
“The President, in exercise of the presidential prerogative vested in the Head of State and Government, has reshuffled the executive. As a result, changes have been made to the portfolio mandates of ministries and state agencies,” Kenya’s State House said in a statement last night.
