Uhuru Kenyatta: My children’s security was withdrawn after Ruto got into office

Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta has set the record straight on the claims that his sons have a number of guns, which the State seeks to repossess.

Uhuru has for the first time narrated the ordeal his family has gone through in recent days with allegations by a number of Kenya Kwanza leaders on the number of guns they have.

According to Uhuru, his two sons have three guns each and his daughter has none, which they were forced to apply for after their security was withdrawn immediately President William Ruto’s government took over office last year.

“My son Jomo, who has never been interested in weapons, was forced to apply for a gun after his security was withdrawn immediately after the new administration came into office,” disclosed Uhuru.

The former Head of State revealed that his plea to the new administration to extend the security of his children for one year to allow them to acclimatise to the new life was rejected.

“I know there is no provision in law to extend the security of my children despite my request. I therefore encouraged them to apply and they followed due process. They went to DCI and even their figure prints were taken and issued with the license,” explained Uhuru.

“My son Jomo applied for three guns for his family’s protection, which is also vital in the operations at our farm in Narok county, with the open safari camps. My younger son has an interest in guns and it’s because of his hobby of shooting birds in Mwea, an irrigation scheme, to scare them away. They are for animals and he applied after I was out of office,” he added.

The Fourth President argued that it was important to secure guns for protection, as his children are at risk and therefore can not take chances.

“This weekend’s drama at my son’s place is still a puzzle. He has never been interested in politics or business,” he said, adding that the founding father Jomo Kenyatta’s family is very huge, and even he has lost count and therefore he can not be held responsible for what they do.

On Friday evening, President Uhuru addressed the nation, faulting the move by the police to raid his son’s residence to confiscate the guns.

Uhuru dared Ruto to come for him and stop harassing his family.

He questioned the intent of the officers driving to his son’s place in a Subaru with a South Sudanese number plate and demanding to access the compound and vowed to protect his family at all costs.

“With technology now, I received a distress call from my son. I watched as they delivered the verbal order, demanding access to recover the alleged gun. No identity, no paperwork, who would believe them? He could not open the gate to strangers. These guns are licensed and in individual’s names,” said Uhuru.

He continued, “There is a procedure to recover the guns. They should state why they want them and the crime committed. The seniors even went after my security officer who responded to my son’s distress call.”

He stressed, “As a family, I would not sit and watch my family suffer. I was forced to respond. Even if today my children are in trouble, I will respond.”

Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki confirmed the raid and issued a statement saying that they are conducting an operation to recover 24 guns in three residence in Karen.

Uhuru Kenyatta has absolved his family from any blame, saying the move is a cover-up to avoid accountability on why his son’s residence was targeted.

“I have now been forced to hire the services of private security. My family is taking measures to ensure we are all safe,” said Uhuru.

For instance, he questioned why his mother Mama Ngina Kenyatta, who is entitled to security from the government as a former First Lady would suffer because of the actions of the state.
