Disquiet as Egerton University staff await redundancy verdict on Tuesday
Staff at Egerton University are in a state of anxiety after the management issued a notice of a meeting to inform them of impending staff redundancies.
In a notice sent out by Senior Assistant Registrar, Human Capital and Administration Department at Egerton University, Maureen Ngala, the meeting is scheduled for February 28, 2023 and comes after another notice dated December 21, 2022 that said the decision was based on the advice of the University Council.
“Following the difficulties the University has undergone in meeting the full requirements for staff salaries and other emoluments and benefits, the University Council on advice has reached a decision to declare staff redundancies across all cadres of staff,” read part of the notice signed by deputy Vice Chancellor Richard Mulwa.
The institution is in the midst of its worst financial crisis, struggling to pay its massive wage bill of more than KES 200 million while also clearing its mounting debt of KES 9 billion.
The university’s staff has also shrunk by about 100 people per year due to natural attrition, retirement, and resignation.
The impending layoffs come months after four University Council members were sentenced to six months in prison for contempt of court in a case involving Prof Rose Mwonya’s reinstatement as Vice Chancellor.
After suspending Prof Mwonya for alleged mismanagement, the council appointed Prof Isaac Kibwage as acting VC.
The University Academic Staff Union (UASU) Egerton Chapter condemned the planned job cuts as “ill-timed, illogical, and irrational,” vowing to fight them. According to the union, the university should instead look into alternative ways of generating revenue and cutting costs.
The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. in Njoro Campus at Kilimo Hall, and all staff are required to attend.
