Ruto vows to end impunity as Odinga threatens mass action
President William Ruto has pledged to uphold the rule of law and ensure equal opportunity for all Kenyans in response to Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya leader Raila Odinga’s threat to lead countrywide mass action if his demands are not met.
Ruto stated during the launch of the Nairobi Rivers Commission that he will ensure that everyone follows the Constitution and the law.
The president stated that he will not tolerate anyone who threatens Kenya or drives the country to impunity.
“We will make sure that everybody obeys the Constitution and respects the rule of law. I want to tell our friends who are used to impunity, who are used to forcing their way, that they will have no way,” Ruto said.
Ruto’s statement comes as tensions between him and his former ally turned rival Odinga rise.
On Wednesday, Odinga declared a 14-day ultimatum to call for mass action while speaking at Nairobi’s Jeevanjee Gardens.
He issued a series of demands to Ruto’s government, including: reducing the high cost of living and lowering taxes; halting the process of reconstituting the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and involving all stakeholders; and opening and auditing the servers used in the 2022 elections.
In response, Ruto said that the government will not be intimidated by the Azimio la Umoja brigade’s demands.
Odinga stated that he was speaking on behalf of Kenyans who face hunger, poverty, unemployment, insecurity, injustice, inequality, and disease.
If his demands are not met, Odinga says he will lead Kenyans to reclaim their power and restore sanity.
