NTV Presents: Wild Wild North – Inside the unending banditry in Baringo
From Nakuru county heading to Tiaty, Mogotio Constituency bridges you into the county of Baringo through Baringo South Constituency as you travel deeper via Marigat town.
The scenes are breathtaking with a view of the majestic Lake Baringo on your right and roaming ostriches on your left.
However, the picture changes from Loruk centre, in Tiaty constituency, regarded by many as the nerve centre of the wild north…you are welcomed by two well-manned security roadblocks in Loruk and Nginyang markets, where hawk-eyed police officers have to clear those getting in or out.
The government has been on a mission to crack down on banditry that has rendered some parts of Northern Kenya no-go zones. In Tiaty, Baringo County, there are villages with no form of government whatsoever. There are no schools, no roads, no hospitals, not even churches.
In Nadome village, residents have been left to their own devices, including providing their own security during raids, and fending off attackers in unforgiving terrain that security boots do not dare set foot in.
Residents here say that no government administration has ever set foot in the area. The area is sparsely populated, which is also attributed to the nomadic way of life here, which makes it difficult to set up basic and permanent facilities.
Seven years ago, this village hit news headlines after more than 50 people were killed by bandits, who attacked the village in the wee hours of the morning, shooting men, women, and children indiscriminately.
The region remains wild and ungoverned with armed groups roaming the wild hills and valleys unchallenged, staging raids and executing killings at will. As a result, residents have taken security matters into their own hands which more often results in senseless killings.
On Sunday, December 11, NTV takes us inside the conflict zone as Duncan Khaemba brings us the unbelievable takes of the forgotten, bandit-infested north.
