Former Kamukunji Chief Inspector Samir Yunus arrested on sexual harassment charges
Former Kamukunji Chief Inspector Samir Yunus has been arrested on suspicion of sexual harassment and abuse of office.
Yunus was apprehended by Internal Affairs Unit detectives on Monday, December 5, under the OB number 18/5/12/2022 at 11:58 am.
According to the police, he was released on cash bail and will appear at the Milimani Law Courts on Wednesday, December 7.
“Yunus was today arrested by officers from the Internal Affairs Unit for the offence of abuse of a position of authority contrary to Section 24(2)(a) of the Sexual Offence Act 2006,” said the police.
Officer Yunus has faced a slew of allegations, including accusations of sexual harassment directed at female officers.
He has also been accused of using brutality on suspects.
The charges against Yunus have been known for a while, and many people have wondered why he was allowed to serve in the police force for so long.
Yunus was exposed in an NTV exposé in July this year that revealed him collecting money in exchange for releasing suspects from detention.
Ngina Kirori dug out the illegal release of Hussein Mumin Hassan, a felon imprisoned for two months before being deported from the country, in an undercover investigative piece.
Hussein was suspected of illegally entering the country.
His relatives made contact with the officers at Pangani Station through a broker, who successfully negotiated a sum of KES 190,000.
During the investigation, Hussein’s cousin and a middleman were summoned to the office of then-Pangani OCS Samir Yunus, who is thought to have assisted in the suspect’s release. Hussein had only been in custody for eight days.
Yunus denied being involved.
In 2020, activist Boniface Mwangi published correspondence between him and a female officer who requested anonymity, alleging that Yunus had assaulted female officers for years.
In the screenshot published by Mwangi on Twitter, the officer said, “Police ladies have been sexually molested by their seniors at their places of work. For example, former ACS Kamukunji Samir Yunus has been molesting police ladies and repartees in all stations he has worked he has molested others to the extent of forcing them to have anal sex with them.”
The officer said a complaint had been lodged with the internal affairs section of the police.
In 2019, while being the boss of Kamukunji police station, Yunus was summoned by Senior Principal Magistrate Angelo Githinji after several suspects complained that he had assaulted them on different occasions.
Yunus was taken to task to explain why the complainants had accused him and not any other officer at the station or other stations.
“You have been sitting here since the court started and you have not heard any such complaints, and we have other stations. The complaints from your station are not against any other officer other than yourself. There must be a problem,” the magistrate told him.
The chief inspector, however, dismissed the claims, saying he is being targeted for refusing to take bribes.
“I might be a difficult officer to deal with because I swore never to take bribes,” he said before he was cut short by the magistrate.
Three suspects in court had accused Yunus of torturing them and pressing charges of trafficking narcotics although they had been arrested for different offenses.
