Pakistani journalist death in Kenya: What we know so far
Pakistani senior journalist Sharif has been confirmed dead while in Kenya.
While details of his death are still scanty, a police incident report has opened a web of speculations online.
His wife Javeria Siddique confirmed the death early Monday morning via her social media handle. She said Sharif was killed on Sunday by police in a mysterious shooting incident.
Siddique has called on Twitter to pull down Sharif’s pictures from the social media site appealing for privacy as the family mourns her husband’s death.
She has asked politicians and media with cameras to stay clear of her home.
Police say Sharif was fatally shot by GSU officers at 10 PM on the passenger seat of a motor vehicle registration number KDG 200M along Kuenia farm marram road in Kajiado.
His brother Khurram Ahmed was on the steering wheel driving back to Nairobi, he is unharmed. National Police Service has not identified the car’s make nor released pictures of it.
Police incident report says upon reaching the Kiserian-Magadi highway, the two found the road blocked using small stones and they allegedly ignored them.
“It was then they heard gunshots towards their vehicle directed from the front and rear. They did not stop and proceeded with the journey. Khurram called Naqar Ahmed also a Pakistan national who reside at Tinga and informed him about the Incident,” the police report said.
“He advised them to pass his place and on arrival at the main gate found his brother had died with a gunshot wound on the head which had penetrated from the back of his head and exited at the front side of his head.”
Police say the vehicle was shot at nine times. It had four bullet holes on the left side of the car where the deceased was sitting.
There was a bullet hole on the left windscreen, two bullet holes on the rear left back screen, one bullet hole on the rear right door, four holes right side of the boot and one front right tyre that had been depleted.
Sharif’s body was found at Chiromo mortuary, 78 kilometers from where police say the shooting happened awaiting postmortem. Pakistan Embassy officials are on site.
The body appears to have two gunshot wounds.
Independent Policing Oversight Authority, (IPOA) has sent a team to Kajiado County to begin investigations into the fatal shooting.
IPOA Chairperson Anne Makori has said the Authority’s investigations will be independent of what the National Police Service is already doing.
Pakistani President Arif Alvi on Monday morning issued a statement following the death of the country’s senior journalist saying the death “Is a great loss to journalism and Pakistan”.
The High Commission will facilitate expeditious repatriation of the mortal remains of Sharif in coordination with the Kenyan authorities. The acting Foreign Secretary of Pakistan has already visited the bereaved family and conveyed confirmation of the sad news, and heartfelt condolences on behalf of the Foreign Minister and the Minister of State.
His family has been assured of all possible assistance by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
