Villa parts ways with manager Steven Gerrard
Following Aston Villa’s 3-0 Premier League loss to Fulham on Thursday, Steven Gerrard was fired as manager.
“We would like to thank Steven for his hard work and devotion and wish him well for the future,” a club spokeswoman said.
Villa only has two victories in the league this year, and they are just above the danger zone in terms of goals scored, and the club opted to move quickly when the visiting crowd repeatedly jeered Gerrard. With less than a year on the job, the 42-year-old hasn’t been able to succeed in his first managerial position in English football.
In November 2021, after leaving his position as manager of Rangers, Gerrard took over for Dean Smith as Villa’s manager.
However, during his 11 months in command, the former England and Liverpool midfielder managed Villa to just 13 victories from 40 games.
Who will be in control of Villa when they play Brentford on Sunday remains unknown. They have thought of a bold move for Mauricio Pochettino and will seek to make a quick appointment. It is unknown if the former manager of Tottenham, who is currently jobless having being fired by Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the previous campaign, would be willing to participate in a relegation struggle.
Thomas Frank of Brentford might be another choice for Villa if Pochettino proves unworkable. However, the Bees have had a solid start to the season and have begun contract negotiations with Frank.
Gerard spoke to the media after the match saying, “Inconsistency has cost us, that’s the position we find ourselves in. I took over the team in a very similar situation. We’ve tried to recruit to get us out of that situation.”
“I’m a fighter – it’s in my DNA. I’ll continue to fight unless I’m told differently.”
About an hour later his time as Villa boss was over.
