Sirikwa Classic: Kibathi, Nduta triumph in U-20 titles
Lobo Village in Eldoret was the host of the Sirikwa World Cross Country Gold Tour on Saturday, where two young athletes rose to the top of their respective categories.
National Cross Country champion Samuel Kibathi dominated the men’s Under-20 8km race, leading from start to finish with a time of 24 minutes and 20 seconds.
Kibathi, who is based in Ngong, was pleased with his performance and stated, “I focused on polishing on my speed work after winning the national title since I had the endurance.” The champion now sets his sights on the Africa Under-20 Championships in Lusaka, Zambia where he hopes to secure a spot in the 10,000m race.
In the women’s Under-20 6km race, Lucy Nduta from Nyahururu emerged victorious after a thrilling battle with Maurine Jepkoech from Elgeyo Marakwet.
Nduta, who had finished seventh in the National Cross Country Championships two weeks prior, found herself trailing Jepkoech in the final lap but summoned the strength to retake the lead in the last 200m and finish with a time of 21:13.
Reflecting on her win, Nduta said, “It was a good race albeit windy and dusty. I was running out of strength into the last lap when Jepkoech passed me, but I summoned the remaining power and it worked in the last 200m after Jepkoech failed to respond.”
Nduta now has her sights set on the Africa Under-20 Championships in August, where she hopes to secure a spot in the 3,000m team.
