Premier League wrap: Saka keeps Arsenal on top amid VAR chaos
Bukayo Saka continued his outstanding form to keep Arsenal top of the Premier League with a 1-0 win at Leeds – but the visitors were fortunate to escape with a win when Patrick Bamford missed a second-half chance.
A power cut after 60 seconds necessitated a 40-minute pause, but no spark was lost in a scintillating Elland Road battle.
At halftime, Leeds substituted Rodrigo with Bamford, shifting the game’s rhythm. First, the striker had a close-range finish controversially ruled out for offside for a shove on Gabriel, before missing a penalty kick after William Saliba handballed.
Arsenal conceded a penalty and Gabriel was sent off for rough behavior on Bamford in stoppage time, but referee Chris Kavanagh was summoned to the VAR monitor and eventually gave a foul in the opposite direction.
Aston Villa 0-2 Chelsea
In other news, Mason Mount took advantage of errors by Tyrone Mings and Emiliano Martinez to give Chelsea a 2-0 win over dismal Aston Villa and put more pressure on manager Steven Gerrard.
Graham Potter has now won all three of his Premier League matches, but he owes a debt of gratitude to goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, who delivered a “world-class performance” at Villa Park to keep the hosts at bay in the first half.
Man Utd 0-0 Newcastle
Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford and Fred both squandered late chances as Newcastle hung on for a goalless draw at Old Trafford.
After Rashford had rounded Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope to bring up the Brazil midfielder, Fred miscued his effort past the post under pressure from Fabian Schar in the 88th minute.
Manchester United return to action on Wednesday, hosting top-four opponents Tottenham at Old Trafford.
Southampton 1-1 West Ham
Declan Rice ended his Premier League goal drought in style but his fine equaliser could not inspire a comeback as West Ham drew 1-1 with Southampton at St Mary’s.
West Ham headed to the south coast on a four-match winning streak in all competitions and looked dangerous throughout but, despite their relentless pressure late on, David Moyes’ side could not find a winner.
