Premier League wrap: Arsenal back on top, Man Utd undone by Emery
Gabriel scored the winner to return Arsenal to the top of the Premier League in a hard-fought 1-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Since taking over in December 2019, manager Mikel Arteta has never lost an Arsenal Premier League match at Stamford Bridge, and his team earned all three points in a contest with few clear-cut opportunities.
The game’s lone goal was scored in the 63rd minute when the central defender poked a probing goalward-bound looped corner from Bukayo Saka over the line.
Meanwhile, Unai Emery enjoyed a dream start to life in the Aston Villa hotseat as meek Manchester United fell to their first Premier League loss at Villa Park since 1995.
On Sunday, the successor to Steven Gerrard presided over a 3-1 victory in his first game in charge, ending a streak of 23 home league games without a victory against the Red Devils that spanned 9,941 days.
At a rocking Villa Park, Lucas Digne and Leon Bailey each scored within the first 11 minutes, and Jacob Ramsey made up for deflecting in a Luke Shaw goal with a fine goal just after halftime for Emery’s jubilant team.
Liverpool hold on for vital win at Spurs
Mohamed Salah scored twice as Liverpool defeated Tottenham 2-1 in north London to reclaim the top-four spot in the Premier League.
In their previous two league games, Jurgen Klopp’s team had suffered shocking losses to relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest and Leeds. However, they got off to a quick start against Spurs, with in-form Salah giving them the lead after just 11 minutes.
Just before the break, the Reds scored once more thanks to a gift from Eric Dier.
Newcastle in form
Newcastle defeated Southampton easily, 4-1, at St. Mary’s to move into third place in the Premier League.
Almiron’s clinical finish in the 35th minute gave Newcastle the lead—his seventh goal in as many Premier League games—before substitute Chris Wood (58), Joe Willock (62) and Bruno Guimaraes (90+1) scored in the second half to give Eddie Howe’s team a comfortable victory on the south coast.
Crystal Palace end away-day woes
With a 2-1 victory over West Ham, Crystal Palace snapped a seven-game away losing streak thanks to a late goal from Michael Olise.
West Ham took the lead when Said Benrahma blasted one home from 22 yards, despite playing second-best the entire time and having just five shots on goal. After a mistake from Thilo Kehrer, Wilfried Zaha scored for Palace to tie the score just before halftime as they continued to play composed possession-based football.
