National Cross Country Champion Charles Lokir claims victory at Sirikwa Classic World Cross Country
National Cross Country champion Charles Lokir continued his impressive run of form with a dominant victory in the men’s 10 kilometre race at the Sirikwa Classic World Cross Country Gold Tour.
The 22-year-old athlete from the North Rift region sealed a double win, following his triumph at the National Cross Country Championships two weeks prior.
Lokir managed to shake off the competition in the final two laps, crossing the finish line in 30 minutes and 14 seconds, outpacing long distance runner Josphat Kiprotich, who came in second place with a time of 30:19.
Dennis Kipng’etich took third place, seven seconds behind Lokir, with Kelvin Kibiwott clocking 30:29 for fourth.
In an interview after the race, Lokir stated, “It was a tight race but I had prepared well though recovery time was short after the nationals. I had the endurance and speed, so going at a slow pace would have been suicidal for me at the tail end of the race.”
He added that the cross country season has provided a solid foundation for the upcoming track season, where he hopes to perform well in the 10,000m and secure a spot at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
“I talked to my brother Joshua Krop in the morning and he gave me advice on how to go for the title. He told me not to put myself under immense pressure,” said Lokir.
In the men’s event, Koech Meshack claimed honours in the Under 18 6 kilometre race, while Chepchirchir Yvonne emerged as the winner in the women’s competition.
Speaking post-race, Kipeygon expressed that despite the tough competition, she enjoyed the race and looked forward to competing in the Sirikwa Classic again next year.
