Messi wins second FIFA best men’s player award after World Cup heroics
Lionel Messi has been crowned The Best FIFA Men’s Player 2022 after leading Argentina to their first World Cup title in 36 years.
The Paris St Germain superstar received the prestigious award at a glittering ceremony in Paris on Monday night, beating his club teammate Kylian Mbappe and Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema in the final voting.
Messi, who also won the award in 2019, becomes the third player to claim it twice, joining Cristiano Ronaldo and Robert Lewandowski. The award was decided by a combination of votes from national team coaches and captains, journalists and fans from around the world.
The 35-year-old had a remarkable year in which he scored 27 goals in 49 games for club and country. He was instrumental in Argentina’s triumphant campaign at the World Cup in Qatar, where he scored four goals and provided five assists.
“This year was crazy for me. I was able to achieve my dream after so much fighting, so much searching, so much insisting. It’s the most beautiful thing that has happened to me in my career,” Messi said after receiving the trophy.
Alexia Putellas, a Spanish midfielder for FC Barcelona (female team), was named The Best FIFA Women’s Player for the second year in a row after leading her club to a third consecutive league title.
Mary Earps was named the Best FIFA Women’s Goalkeeper in a year in which she helped the Lionesses win the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022.
Following his outstanding performances throughout the FIFA World Cup 2022, Argentina shot-stopper Emiliano Martnez was named The Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper.
Sarina Wiegman, the manager of the English national team, was named The Best FIFA Women’s Coach after leading the Lionesses to European glory and her second consecutive UEFA EURO title, while Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni added The Best FIFA Men’s Coach to his trophy cabinet, alongside the FIFA World Cup trophy.
