How Qatar spent over KES 27 trillion over twelve years to prepare for the World Cup
In a moment that football fans in the Arab world and around the world will never forget, Joseph Blatter, the former president of the International Football Association (FIFA), announced on the evening of December 2, 2010, that the State of Qatar had been awarded the honor of hosting the 2022 World Cup.
For the first time, a nation from the Arab Middle East has been chosen to host this occasion.
Since Qatar’s first day of announcing its desire to host the World Cup, Qatar has promised the world sophisticated stadiums where the most important football tournament matches will be held, so the journey to realizing the dream of hosting the World Cup finals has been full of details and hard work.
It wouldn’t be easy, a requirement that the stadiums meet the highest standards in stadium technology and feature the best sports facility designs was to play part. Qatar had faith in its word. It gave the world 8 magnificent environmental friendly stadiums with cutting-edge technology and sustainable heritage.
The construction and development of the World Cup stadiums was accompanied by a revolution in infrastructure modernization that covered every square inch of Qatar’s territory, including sea and land ports, the best airport in the world, electricity and communications, facilities for health and education, tourism and entertainment, and many more that would surprise even a resident of Qatar.
The State of Qatar has carried out infrastructure projects over the previous years that covered all important fields, including sports facilities, stadiums, roads, hotels, communications, transportation, health, and other projects that will serve as evidence of the rapid development that Qatar has experienced.
Official figures show that Qatar has spent about USD 220 billion (KES 26.9 trillion) on infrastructure projects. This amount includes all infrastructure projects in the nation, including stadiums, roads, hotels, sports facilities, health facilities, and other costs that apply to all economic sectors.
The World Cup in Qatar is more than just a sporting event, as officials of the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy and state officials have previously stated. Hosting the tournament for the first time in the Middle East served as a base for launching and accelerating enormous projects, a significant portion of which are infrastructure projects.
Over the past years, Qatar has managed to build more than 100 new hotels within a luxury hotel chain, bringing the total number of rooms in the country to more than 30,000 hotel rooms. Qatar has also built the metro network “Doha Metro” which includes about 38 stations covering all important locations in the country.
The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 will be the first World Cup to exclusively use 5G technologies, and internet data download speeds in stadiums will be among the fastest during World Cup competitions thanks to the innovative infrastructure projects that Qatar has completed in the fields of communications and digital transformation over the past few years.
The State of Qatar’s hosting of the World Cup resulted in the establishment of numerous infrastructure projects in the health industry, which has recently attained advanced global centers thanks to the use of modern facilities and medical technologies. The State of Qatar now has 10 public hospitals in addition to specialized medical centers, and 30 primary health centers spread out across the State of Qatar.
In the area of roads, Qatar has integrated 2,131 km of bicycle and pedestrian lanes into the majority of local road and highway projects with the goal of promoting a healthy lifestyle. With the addition of the building of more than 16 bridges and five pedestrian tunnels, these paths are connected to every World Cup stadium.
As part of the state’s plan to develop the transportation industry, Qatar has finished work on bus depots in the Lusail area project and completed car parks covering a total area of more than 6 million square meters. For the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 matches, parking is available for nearly 478 electric buses at the Lusail bus depot.
Through the development and expansion of some roads and the development of many intersections, the Supervisory Committee for Beautification of Roads and Public Places in the nation is enhancing the aesthetics of the city of Doha. It includes 12 new beaches being built in various parts of the country, 900,000 trees, and more than 11 million square meters of green space in addition to 11 parks and a multi-use green yard.
Qatar was able to construct 1,791 km of roads in the highway sector, including 207 bridges and 143 tunnels. Of these, the Sabah Al-Ahmad Corridor, which is 29 km long, and the Al Majd Road, which is 195 km long, are the most significant because they connect numerous roads that serve the World Cup stadiums.
The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 will be the first carbon-neutral World Cup in the sport’s history. In addition to installing stations to measure air quality, gas emissions, and dust in all World Cup stadiums, Qatar has been successful in building sustainable stadiums, including design, construction, energy use, and water use. It has also organized a system for sorting waste during the stadium construction phase, to reduce the carbon footprint, and to recycle about 80% of the waste generated from the construction of the World Cup stadiums.
The World Cup efforts made by Qatar are consistent with current sustainability trends and the country’s goal of achieving balanced and sustainable growth. Some World Cup venues were created with a temporary use in mind, and some of them can even be disassembled. One such venue is Stadium 974, which was constructed using shipping containers and removable materials for the walls, ceiling, and seats. All World Cup venues also use high cooling systems that are environmentally friendly, as well as cutting-edge lighting technologies that satisfy sustainability standards.
According to reports posted by the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) on its official website, the stadiums and practice fields for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 cost USD 6.3 billion (KES 772 billion), spread out over twelve years. This budget is comparable to those for the most recent Olympic Games and FIFA World Cup.
On the other hand, it is anticipated that the State of Qatar will receive economic benefits worth around USD 17 billion (KES 2 trillion) from hosting the World Cup. The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 is expected to generate USD 2.2 billion (KES 269 billion) in direct financial revenues, while the long-term economic benefits are predicted to be worth USD 2.7 billion (KES 330 billion), amid expectations of an increase.
