Cleo Malala football tournament expands to cover five counties
Football fans from Western Kenya are set to yet again enjoy football extravaganza from the 5th edition of Cleo Malala supercup sponsored by former Kakamega senator Cleophas Malala.
Speaking during the official launch at his Milimani residence in Kakamega, the fomer legislator who was flanked by western region FKF officials said that the tournament aims at not only uniting Western region but also scouting raw talent from the grassroots.
Unlike the previous four editions, this time, all the four Western counties which are Bungoma, Vihiga, Kakamega, Busia as well as Trans Nzoia county will be incorporated .
“We are blessed this year the overall champion will take home KES 3 milion unlike the previous edition where the winner walked home with one million,” said Malala.
The tournament that will commence mid February 2023 will see 3,500 teams from the 38 constituencies of the Mulembe nation participate .
The overall winner will take home a grand prize of KES 3 million, while the first runners up will pocket KES 1.5 million.The second runners up will take home 1 milion as the fourth position will have KES 500,000 as their package.
The 4th edition was held in December 2021 at the Mumias sports complex where Munami FC bagged the price of KES 1 million with President Wiliam attending as the chief guest.
FKF officials who spoke at the launch led by Vihiga county chairperson Kevin Mwambu lauded the move saying it will be another platform to showcase hidden football talent
It should be noted that a number of notable footballers both locally and internationally have been previously scouted from the Cleo Malala tournament. A good example is Hillary Simiyu who currently plays for Ulinzi stars in the FKF premier league and Henry Meja who is at AIK Solna in Sweden, among others.
Others who emerged from Cleo Malala super cup include Nahashon Wekesa who played for Arsen Lihrembe in Ikolomani and moved KCB ,David simiyu who sprouted MMUST FC and Kona rangers and currently plays for Kenya Police fc.
All the teams participating in this year’s tournament will receive football kits and special training for the coaches and team captains.
