Homa Bay hosts ‘Mashemeji’ derby as Gor Mahia face AFC Leopards
The stage is set for a high-stakes showdown as Gor Mahia host arch-rivals AFC Leopards in a potentially title-deciding ‘Mashemeji’ Derby at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay County today from 3pm.
This 97th meeting between the two sworn enemies is the biggest fixture in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKF-PL) calendar and will, for the first time, be played in Homa Bay County.
The match is expected to be graced by President William Ruto and Opposition Leader Raila Odinga, who have been on a four-day tour of the county that culminated in the 62nd Madaraka Day celebrations yesterday at the venue.
For Gor Mahia, this is a must-win clash as they fight to retain their FKF-PL title. They currently sit second on the log with 55 points—six behind league leaders Kenya Police FC, who have played a game more.
A loss today would hand the title to Kenya Police, as Gor would only be able to reach a maximum of 60 points with wins in their last two fixtures, assuming Police lose both.
The original fixture was scheduled for May 11, but had to be postponed due to unavailability of both Nyayo National Stadium and Moi International Sports Centre, which are undergoing renovations.
After today’s derby, Gor Mahia will take on Ulinzi Stars on Thursday, before ending the season with a crucial clash against Kenya Police on June 15. Meanwhile, Kenya Police face Shabana on Wednesday, followed by their final match against Gor.
Gor’s only path to the title lies in winning all three remaining matches and hoping Kenya Police drop points against Shabana.
Beyond the numbers, the ‘Mashemeji’ Derby carries immense pride and passion. Leopards coach Fred Ambani, who boasts an unbeaten record against Gor both as a player and coach, will be eager to maintain that streak.
“All said and done, the battle for bragging rights will be on the pitch, and the ecstatic crowd is expected to play its part,” said Ambani.
While Gor have struggled with a blunt attack in recent matches, they will rely heavily on midfielder Austin Odhiambo, who has scored nine goals this season. Striker Benson Omala, who joined late in the season, has chipped in with four goals.
On the wings, coach Zedekiah ‘Zico’ Otieno is likely to deploy Shariff Musa, with Enock Morisson another viable option. Alpha Onyango has also been a standout performer in midfield, while Joshua Onyango and Philemon Otieno are expected to anchor the defence.
For AFC Leopards, Musa Oundo remains the heartbeat of the midfield. Despite struggling in attack this season, Ambani is expected to choose between Victor ‘Aguero’ Otieno and Victor Omune to lead the line, with Maxwell Otieno playing in support. Omune is Ingwe’s top scorer with five goals.
“Derby is a big game and being at home we have to score goals since a win is not an option but a must for us. We have to fight for all the points in this game,” said Gor Mahia forward Benson Omala yesterday.
Ambani, however, stressed the importance of effort and pride even though Leopards are not in title contention.
“Derbies are for bragging rights apart from the title issue. My record of not losing to Gor must be intact,” said the former Kenyan international.
AFC Leopards last beat Gor Mahia 2-1 on May 14, 2023, at Nyayo National Stadium. Gor’s last win over Ingwe came in the second leg of last season on April 24, 2024, with a 1-0 victory.
