Trouble in Kilifi as elected leaders engage in public spat

The rift between Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro and the area Women Representative Getrude Mbeyu was on Friday in full public display during the Mashujaa Day fete.

The two are accusing each other of mismanagement of funds in their various elective offices.

The disagreement went a notch higher when both leaders shared a podium at Kaya Fungo area in Kaloleni Sub County turning the Mashujaa Day event into a shouting arena.

Trouble started when Mbeyu arrived when Kaloleni MP Paul Katana was making his address to residents when the booing started.

Mr Katana invited the MCA to speak and immediately she got to the podium, a section of the crowd started shouting her down forcing her to hurriedly finish the speech.

At one time Mbeyu had to cut short her speech as she pleaded with Mr Katana to calm down the crowd and blamed him for inciting residents against her.

Arched with the reception, Mbeyu left the venue moments after Deputy Governor Flora Chibule took to the podium and urged her to be respectful of other leaders.

Youth who were heckling her shouted at her to go and made sure her vehicles had left the venue.

Deputy Governor Florah Chibule who spoke after Mbeyu said that there was a need for leaders to unite and respect each other for the benefit of the people of Kilifi.

Normalcy returned thereafter with leaders urging Governor Mung’aro to convene an agent-elected leaders meeting to iron out their differences.

Ganze MP Kenneth Kazungu called on the government to transfer all education officials in the Sub County after nine schools experienced arson incidents within two months in Ganze Sub County.

Kilifi County Police commander Fatuma Hadi on her part called on residents to work together with her team so that they can arrest cases of defilement in the county.

Governor Mung’aro also unveiled volunteer community health workers and issued them with health insurance covers paid for by his administration.

He also said that his government had enrolled the elderly for a monthly stipend to enable them to cope with life.
