Suspense in Magarini, Malindi as absence of functional IEBC delays by-election

Aspirants eyeing the Magarini parliamentary seat whose election was overturned by the Malindi High Court in March this year are demanding the speedy reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission to facilitate a by-election.

The current MP Harrison Garama Kombe is sitting on a tightrope after Justice Alfred Mabeya nullified his win on March 3 over irregularities concerns including ballot stuffing and exchange of votes during the August 9, 2022 poll.

Former Adu ward MCA and United Democratic Alliance (UDA) aspirant Stanley Karisa Kenga who emerged second in the polls filed the petition.

Already aspirants for the yet-to-be-declared vacant seat by the Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula have started early preparation with anticipation that the IEBC would have been fully reconstituted by August.

Led by Renson Kambi who defended his sit for the Marafa ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) but lost to an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) green horn said that the slow pace in reconstituting the electoral body was creating suspense among voters in the constituency.

The former MCA is set to battle for the Pamoja African Alliance (PAA) ticket with former Magarini MP and brother to Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, Michael Thoya Kingi, a move that is expected to elicit a reaction from the Kenya Kwanza brigade.

“There is a likelihood that IEBC might be reconstituted by August this year so that a date for the by-election can be set so that we go back to the people in a by-election. I know there will be tension in our party PAA but we are confident that the ticket will be handed to me,” he said.

Michael Mwagandi and Peter Ziro from Magarini and Garashi wards said that if the PAA ticket is given to Michael Kingi, then they will rally Kambi to run on an independent ticket.

“If the ticket is given to Michael Kingi, we shall rally our candidate on an independent ticket. This time round we want the MP seat to go to Marafa ward which has never produced one before,” said Mr Mwagandi.

Kombe who vied on an ODM party ticket was declared the winner after garnering 11,946 votes against Mr Kenga of UDA who got 11,925 votes, a difference of 21 votes.

Immediate former MP Michael Kingi who vied on a PAA ticket garner 7,921 votes whereas Samuel Nzai of Narc got 7,421 votes, Mr Martin Mangi Mwaro, an independent candidate got 2,494 votes, Mr Hamadi Karisa of Federal Party of Kenya (FPK) and Mr John Masha of the Kadu Asili got 247 and 147 votes respectively.

Kombe returned to the 13th Parliament after five years in the political cold.

He was floored by Senate Speaker Amason Kingi in the 2007 General Election but recaptured the same in 2013, but lost the seat to Kingi’s brother, Michael Thoya Kingi in 2017.
