Sudi, Aladwa, and Arama named least active Members of Parliament
Kapsaret MP Oscar Sudi, Makadara MP George Aladwa and Nakuru MP Samuel Arama, have not uttered a word in any Parliament.
According to the inaugural scorecard for the 13th Parliament released by Mzalendo Trust Executive 15 Members of the National Assembly did not contribute on the floor of the House, some of whom were highlighted in previous scorecards of the 12th Parliament.
The scorecard revealed that Kitui Central MP Makali Mulu and Dagoretti North MP Beatrice Elachi were the most engaged members of the National Assembly.
Additionally, Seme MP James Nyakali and Kilifi South MP Ken Chonga were also active in parliamentary discussions, addressing matters such as food security, drought, and environmental conservation.
However, Carolyne Ngatia, the Executive Director of Mzalendo Trust, noted a discrepancy between citizen expectations and parliamentary actions.
She said, “Whereas citizens have invested heavily in public participation, the results have not been reflected in the most anticipated legislative proposals.” Ngatia’s viewpoint emphasized that there is room for improvement in bridging the gap between public input and parliamentary decisions.
The report illustrated this disparity by highlighting that despite public outcry over the high cost of living, members of the National Assembly did not respond to the appeals of Kenyans to reject certain “punitive” clauses of the Finance Bill, 2023.
The 2023 Parliamentary Scorecard evaluated the period from September 29, 2022, to June 30.
