Standoff looms as Ruto demands cost of living dropped from bipartisan talks
President William Ruto’s tough condition ruling out talks on the high cost of living has unsettled the opposition camp ahead of today’s crucial meeting by the national dialogue committee.
It has emerged that during the secret meeting between President Ruto and Azimio leader Raila Odinga in Mombasa, the President issued a condition to Raila to have the dialogue committee discuss all the other matters except the cost of living, arguing that, the issue of the cost of living is currently in court.
This position has unsettled the Azimio negotiating team who are now demanding to have the need to lower the current high cost of living as an agenda before the committee.
At the same time the Jubilee party has raised fresh demands to the opposition’s lead negotiator Kalonzo Musyoka to have them adopted by the bipartisan committee before any substantial matter is discussed.
NTV has established that in a meeting chaired by Musyoka, the jubilee officials including the party’s secretary general, Jeremiah Kioni, tasked Kalonzo Musyoka to demand the adoption of the bare minimum fresh demands before any substantial agenda can be discussed by the talks committee.
The demands include… Issuance of an interim order to have nominated MP Sabina Chege relinquish the position of the minority whip in the national assembly, suspension of the activities of the IEBC selection panel, dropping of the court charges against opposition MPs in connection with the countrywide anti-government protests and a clear commitment to immediately stop the interference of the jubilee party.
