Ruto urges Raila to support his administration, drop anti-government protests
President William Ruto has called on opposition leader Raila Odinga to cease the ongoing anti-government protests and support his administration.
Speaking during a rally in Migori County, Ruto implored Odinga to reciprocate the support he received from him during the 2007 General Election.
“The work we did is the one that made Raila Odinga a Prime Minister. Ever since, has he ever received any other seat close to that of a Prime Minister? So I want to ask Raila, I supported and even campaigned for you and have voted for you. When will you ever vote for me?” Ruto asked.
Ruto also urged Odinga to support his 2027 Presidential bid, stating that instead of planning anti-government protests, he should prepare to vote for him.
“Let him return the favor and vote for me, I suffered a lot while supporting him,” Ruto added.
The president castigated Odinga for holding protests, stating that they have derailed development and negatively affected the country’s economy.
He implored the Azimio la Umoja leader to stop the Monday and Thursday protests and support the Kenya Kwanza administration to spur development.
“Touts and traders, boda bodas, and kiosk owners did not work on Monday. What are you asking them? If you have a problem, face me. Stop disturbing citizens,” he added.
Ruto’s call to Odinga came just a day after he urged him to stop the protests, claiming that the armed forces commander-in-chief had reprimanded him for the negative effects on businesses.
Ruto, who is seeking to unite the country after the 2022 general elections, said he supported Raila and even helped him secure the Prime Minister’s post after the 2007 General Election in former late President Mwai Kibaki’s administration.
He pleaded with Raila to support his administration, stating that it was the right thing to do in returning the favor.
“I will work with all leaders and communities under my Kenya Kwanza agenda. No regions will be discriminated against,” he added.
Ruto insisted that his administration would ensure that no force or nobody takes the people of Nyanza in the wrong or opposite direction of the government.
He promised to work with all leaders who were elected in the last elections to unite the country and plan development with the people of Nyanza.
