Sauti sol offer an apology for Sol Fest hiccups
KICC was an outburst of fans who had dedicated their night to attend the highly acclaimed Sol festival. Having had the first one done last year, the expectation was that the 2nd edition would be a culmination of intense preparations and a stellar delivery of an experience to close the year. Needless to say that was not the case.
From the look of things, Sol fest had upped their game from an experiential perspective; it mirrored shincity. The idea was clear, make memories and enjoy the experience. Perhaps what they forgot to tell their fans was that the festival would be less about the four boy band group (sauti sol) and more about promoting other musical artists.
It is for this reason that as late as 3am the Live and Die in Africa hit makers were yet to get on stage. A long line up of artists and extensive Dj sets that seemed to drain the energy out of enthused fans rather than energize them for the Lil mama hitmakers, extended past the expected time.
Sauti sol finally made their way to the stage, in rather casual fashion after an energized Harmonize entertained the fans for what seemed like main act set.
After what seemed like 5 songs performance, the group vanished, leaving fans rather disappointed. What was to be a culmination of the event seemed like another appearance to make way for what was to be the main performance. By this time it was too late.
Bensoul was the last performance, his arrival was met with a number of fans exiting after being drained off every ounce of energy. The peddi hitmaker, performed to a scattered audience that seemed exhausted: By this time, it was 5am.
“3AM surely. By this time I should be deciding whether I want to stay or be at home by choice,” Wrote an angry fan on twitter.
What followed was a chain of tweeter threads, fans angry at what was ‘a below average event’
“How can you have two alcohol stands at an event with that many people? smh,” read another tweet.
Sol fest management on Tuesday, released a statement that seemed to thank the fans for showing up, but also offer an apology for the mismanagement of time.
“Our intention was to put on a spectacular event, ensuring each artist and group received enough time to deliver their very best performance to all fans. We also put more focus on the local talent who were perfoming, and our intentional guests. We acknowledge that this may have led to some unfortunate delays in keeping the show running in a timely fashion and would like to reassure all our fans and supporters that we will plan better for this in the future. ” Read part of the statement.
Solfest Management went on to emphasize that the festival idea was more to give an opportunity to other artists and was not about Sauti sol alone, a fact that they perhaps didn’t emphasize prior.
“Solfest was conceptualized as a showcase for musicians and businesses within Sol Generation’s core values- Discipline, Order, Passion and Excellence (D.O.P.E), and is intended to serve as a platform not just for Sauti Sol and Sol Generation artists, but for a variety of talented African musicians.”
