The grandest stage of them all this currently in full flow. The world cup has come with it some major upsets, twists and turns. Here are some interesting facts to know as the world gears up for the quarterfinals stage.
1. The Last 7 world cup shoot outs have been won by the team that shoots second
After Croatia beat Japan on penalties on Monday to stamp their ticket for the quarterfinal, an interesting fact came up.
All the last seven world cup penalty shootouts at any stage in the knockout phase have been won by the team that shoots second from the spot.
If fate is anything to go by, for you to win a penalty shootout in the world cup just let your opponents be the first to take the first spot kick.
2. Olivier Giroud is over the moon
Olivier Giroud’s goal, in the world cup against Poland in their 3-1 win has him surpass Thierry Henry as the all-time goal scorer in French football history with 52 goals against Henry’s 51 goals. So much for a player who struggled so much in the Premier League.
3. Messi and Maradona coincidence
Many have tried to put a comparison between Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona, for club and country, both serving their time in National colours.
This is probably Messi’s final trial at the world cup as age has seemingly started to weigh him down.
However here is something freaky so far to add to the comparison, for this two perhaps to indicate that they both are equals among gods.
At the World Cup, both Messi and Maradona have created 67 chances. Both have created 48 chances of these from open play moreover, they both have 103, touches in the opposition box.
4. Brazil becomes first team in history to use all their players in a world cup
With the introduction of third-choice Brazil goalkeeper Weverton Pereira da Silva in their 4-1 victory over South Korea, Brazil became the first team in world cup history to use every member of their 26-man squad in the world cup.
This just goes to show the depth of that squad, as coaches in the tournament usually opt to have a first-team squad and just do minor changes in the team as the tournament progresses.
