‘Cook Dat Ting!’ Kenyans Stir-Fry Bensoul’s ‘Sol Fest’ Remarks
The Kenyan music scene was buzzing with controversy on Saturday morning as artist Bensoul’s comments sparked heated debates about Sauti Sol’s upcoming event, ‘Sol Fest.’ The VIP entrance fee of a staggering KES 20,000 had tongues wagging, and Bensoul did not hesitate to share his thoughts on the matter.
In a social media post shared on Elon Musk’s X platform (formerly Twitter), Bensoul threw down the gauntlet, stating, “Kama 20k ya kuona Sauti Sol inakushinda by November, you have a long way to go. Wacha wenye pesa waende. One thing I know for sure is we are going to sell out.” In simpler terms, if you can’t afford to see Sauti Sol for 20k, step aside and let the big spenders enjoy the show.
As expected, the internet went into a frenzy, with Kenyans divided over Bensoul’s alleged “broke shaming” statements. Some rallied behind the ‘Navutishwa’ crooner, agreeing that it’s a luxury event, and those with deep pockets should be the target audience. Others, however, did not take kindly to the jabs, accusing Bensoul of being out of touch with reality.
But Bensoul was not one to back down. He followed up with another post, firmly asserting, “This broke mentality needs to go!!” It seems the artist has sparked a conversation about financial elitism and access to high-profile events in the entertainment scene.
The controversial event in question, ‘Sol Fest’, is billed as Sauti Sol’s final show before their “indefinite hiatus.” The band is offering fans two separate days to catch their electrifying performance. The fan show, now priced at KES 3,500 per ticket, will take place on November 4th. Meanwhile, the VIP show, which comes with a jaw-dropping KES 20,000 price tag per head, is scheduled two days earlier, for November 2nd.
While some fans are willing to shell out the cash for an exclusive experience with Sauti Sol, others argue that such high prices may alienate a significant portion of their dedicated fan base.
As the online discussions continue to simmer, ‘Sol Fest’s fate remains uncertain. Will the event indeed sell out as Bensoul confidently predicts, or will the controversial price tag deter many from attending?
