5 new features in the world cup 2022
The FIFA world cup is up and running and in full flow at that. Its already proving to be a tournament of many firsts.
1. Substitutions
All 32 teams will be able to make a total of five substitutions in a World Cup tournament for the very first time with previous rules allowing only 3 substitutions. This is a change that came into the game attributed to the pandemic.
2. Offside Technology
This is the first World cup where the semi-automated offside technology will be used. This technology is similar to the goal-line technology say for players. In a situation that a player is offside, the linesman gets a buzz on his wristwatch indicating an offside player. It is an upgrade with regards to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR). Former Arsenal manager Arsen Wenger has had a big push in the recent past to this proposal. According to his theory, a player should be judged offside only if any part of the body with which he can score a goal is past the last defender. The semi-automated offside technology is a support tool for the video match official and the on-field officials to help them make decisions faster.
3. 26-man squad
This is also the only FIFA world cup where teams have 26-man squads. Initially they used to have 23-man squads.
4.Goalkeeper penalty line rule.
Another new rule that is being implemented during this world cup is that one of the goalkeeper’s feet must be on the line at the point the ball is struck during a penalty.
5. Women referees
Women referees have been selected to officiate as center referees at the FIFA men’s World cup for the first time in history. Yamashita Yoshimi (Japan), Salima Mukansanga (Rwanda) and Stephanie Frappart (France) will officiate among the 36 referees selected for the tournament.
