The presence of organised criminal gangs and their extreme brutality has sharply increased since the post-independence era in Kenya. Since the 1990s, violence, ethnic divisions and corruption have all been linked to the gang phenomena in the country. The cycle of violence has become so pervasive that many politicians are now entrenched in funding their own gangs to win an election by any means necessary.
