Uhuru visits Goma, meets IDPs displaced by M23 rebels in DRC
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday made an official visit to Goma on as part of his outreach sessions with stakeholders on a peace-seeking mission in DRC.
Uhuru, who is the EAC-Facilitator of the Nairobi Process on Peace and Stability in Eastern DRC and AU-Kenya Peace Envoy, expressed worry that the terrible humanitarian crisis in and around Goma has seriously hampered his work and made it nearly impossible for him to fully realize the potential of his role while fighting and the widespread displacement of towns and villages are still taking place.
Tens of thousands of internally displaced people were present on the sides of the roads when Kenyatta arrived at an internment camp for displaced people close to Goma. The EAC Facilitator noted the suffering that armed groups’ cycle of conflict had caused for defenseless men, women, children, and the elderly.
The former president observed the negative impact of the violence of the M23 rebels and other armed groups, which amounted to grave human rights violations and resulted in the displacement of millions in Eastern DRC, during a Roundtable with representatives of the FARDC, MONUSCO, and the East African Community Regional Force.
He emphasized the need for immediate action from the UNSC, AUPSC, and the international community.
The EAC-Facilitator urged the international community and aid agencies like UNICEF WFP, IOM, and UN OCHA to act quickly and effectively to alleviate the terrible suffering and human misery.
He continued by pointing out that the rebel groups and those who support them have not adhered to the terms of the Nairobi Conclaves, which had been agreed upon by all EAC Heads of State and stipulated that the fighting forces would remain in the positions that they were at the time.
Uhuru noted the current humanitarian crisis that has arisen as a result of disregard for the directives made in Nairobi during the Heads of State Conclaves.
He emphasized further that this is likely to jeopardize the military track, which depended on everyone holding onto their positions so that the East African Regional Force could intervene.
