Profile of Rishi Sunak, UK’s new super-rich Prime Minister with Kenyan roots

Rishi Sunak is set to become the first Hindu and person of color to be elected Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

The former finance minister, took a high-risk gamble. He launched an attack that helped bring Boris Johnson’s premiership to an end, campaigned for his replacement, but lost to Liz Truss. He retired to the parliamentary back benches after conceding defeat.

Sunak has returned triumphant from the political wilderness to succeed Truss, whose premiership disintegrated last week, in a sign of how unpredictable British politics has become.

Where is Rishi Sunak from?

Rishi Sunak was born on May 12, 1980, at Southampton General Hospital.

Yashvir Sunak, his father, was born in Kenya, while Usha, his mother, was born in Tanganyika. Rishi Sunak’s grandparents were born in India’s Punjab region and immigrated to Britain from East Africa in the 1960s.

His mother, Usha, was the manager of Weston Pharmacy in Southampton at the time. Yashvir, his father, was a general practitioner.

Rishi Sunak’s family lived in Richmond Gardens in Portswood before relocating to Spindlewood Close in Bassett following the births of Rishi’s brother Sanjay and sister Raakhi.

What is Rishi Sunak’s education?

Sunak attended the Oakmount prep school in Southampton until it closed in 1989. He then went to Romsey’s Stroud School.

Rishi later enrolled as a boarder at Winchester College in Hampshire.

He studied philosophy, politics, and economics at Oxford University before earning a Masters in Business Administration at Stanford University in the United States.

What is Rishi Sunak’s net worth?

Sunak was named to the Sunday Times rich list of the UK’s wealthiest people earlier this year.

According to the Guardian, he is the first frontline politician to be named to the yearly list since it was established in 1989.

According to the list, his and his wife’s net worth is KES 99.8B (£730 million), with their sources of wealth classified as “technology and hedge fund.”

Sunak also has a portfolio of four homes worth more than £15 million, according to the Guardian.

What is Rishi Sunak’s political career?

Sunak made his fortune as a hedge fund manager before getting involved in politics.

He married Akshata Murthy, the daughter of Indian billionaire NR Narayana Murthy, who founded the IT firm Infosys, in 2009.

He was elected MP for Richmond in 2015. He was appointed junior minister in 2018 and secretary to the Treasury in July 2019.

Sunak was promoted to chancellor after Boris Johnson’s first chancellor, Sajid Javid, resigned in February 2020.

Soon after, Sunak became the driving force behind the UK economy’s recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic, launching initiatives like as Eat Out To Help Out.

Sunak resigned as Chancellor in July after months of pressure from then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Sunak’s leadership campaign

Following Boris Johnson’s resignation as Prime Minister, Sunak launched his ‘Ready For Rishi’ leadership campaign.

Sunak and Liz Truss competed for the Tory leadership before she received the most votes and became Prime Minister.
