China takes punitive action against organisations advocating Taiwan’s independence

The measures were released after Tsai met with Speaker of the US House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy on Wednesday in California, angering Beijing, which claims the self-ruled democratic island as its own.
A spokesman for the ruling Communist Party’s Taiwan Affairs Office called Hsiao a “hardcore ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist” and banned him and his family members from entering the mainland, Hong Kong and Macao.
China slapped similar sanctions measures last August, including an entry ban on Hsiao, in response to a visit to Taiwan by McCarthy’s predecessor Nancy Pelosi.
China, which regards Taiwan as a renegade province vowing to unite with the mainland by force if necessary, warned of retaliation ahead of talks between Tsai and the third-highest-ranking US official.
Taiwan’s foreign ministry criticized Beijing’s move, saying in a statement on Friday that conducting diplomatic activities is “a fundamental right of our head of state” and that “China has no right to interfere,” Kyodo News reported. .
The ministry claimed that China “exaggerated” by imposing the ban. It added, “Such deceitful behavior not only deepens the resentment of the Taiwanese people but also exposes the irrational and absurd nature of the Communist regime.”
The ministry said that coercion and repression “will only strengthen the Taiwanese government’s faith in freedom and democracy.”
Communist-led China and Taiwan have been governed separately since a civil war split in 1949
