Buhari congratulates Tinubu on victory, admits flaws in election process

Outgoing Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his victory in the 2023 presidential election.

In his message, Buhari said he was ready to work together with Tinubu and his team to ensure a smooth transition of power.

He called Tinubu the best candidate for the job and praised him for winning a hotly contested election in which states across Nigeria switched political allegiances.

Buhari hailed the election as proof that democracy is still relevant and capable of delivering for the people it serves. He stated that the election demonstrated that democracy is maturing in Nigeria and that the results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission reflected the will of the people (INEC).

“The election was Africa’s largest democratic exercise. In a region that has undergone backsliding and military coups in recent years, this election demonstrates democracy’s continued relevance and capability to deliver for the people it serves,” Buhari said.

He did, however, admit that there were some flaws in the election process, particularly in the electronic transmission of results. He stated that some aspects of the voting process must be improved in order to increase transparency and credibility.

“That is not to say the exercise was without fault. For instance, there were technical problems with electronic transmission of the results. Of course, there will be areas that need work to bring further transparency and credibility to the voting procedure,” Buhari wrote.

He also urged politicians and candidates who believe the election was rigged to present evidence to back up their claims. He cautioned against taking their grievances to the streets, urging them to take their challenge to the courts.

“Let us now move forward as one. The people have spoken,” he said, calling on all candidates to remember the peace pledge they signed just days before the election.

Official results show that Tinubu, a 70-year-old veteran politician, received 8.81 million votes (37% of the vote).

His main rival, Atiku Abubakar, received 29% of the vote, while Labour’s Peter Obi received 25%. Their parties had previously called the election a sham and demanded a rerun.

Tinubu is one of Nigeria’s wealthiest politicians, and his campaign is based on his record of rebuilding the country’s largest city, Lagos, while he was governor.
