World leaders congratulate William Ruto after Supreme Court upholds win
Leaders from around the world have congratulated President-elect William Ruto on his victory, which was validated by Kenya’s Supreme Court.
Here’s a snapshot of reactions from around the world:
US President Joe Biden through White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre congratulated Ruto and applauded the people of Kenya on the conclusion of a peaceful electoral process
A dispatch from Beijing said China President Xi JinPing labelled ties with Nairobi as “a time-honour friendship” which will continue under Ruto.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken congratulated Ruto and expressed his desire to work with the incoming government and extend their long-standing alliance for the benefit of Kenyans and Americans alike.
Blinken also praised Raila Odinga for respecting the Supreme Court’s verdict, adding that transparent electoral processes and peaceful dispute resolution are testaments to the robustness of democratic institutions.
Vicky Ford, Minister for Africa at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office in the UK, also expressed her congratulations and stated that she was looking forward to working with to enhance the countries’ strategic partnership. She praised Kenya and its leaders for pursuing a democratic process that was calm, peaceful, and transparent.
Uganda President Yoweri Museveni also commended William Ruto and stated that the EAC agenda would be strengthened through their partnership.
Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema congratulated Ruto, saying the two countries would endeavor to build and improve historical relations based on common interests.
Moussa Faki, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, also conveyed his congratulations and congratulated Raila Odinga for demonstrating true leadership in response to the Supreme Court verdict.
