Wooden power lines damaged by termites pose threat to Meru residents
Kenya Power Company Meru branch is on the spot over cases of several wooden poles damaged by termites carrying live wire in residential areas at Thimangiri village,Imenti North constituency Meru county which is a looming danger to both commuters and residents. Besides this, the branches of huge trees on this stretch are burdening the weak poles with extra load, thus making them more risky.
Several other poles are in a precarious position and may fall anytime due to heavy corrosion in the bottom where residents fear someone will be killed or properties damaged if the poles came down.
Hanging electric poles at few places within the area in the area is another threat.Residents fear that these poles may snap anytime and if any of these falls on pedestrians or a vehicle on the busy Meru- Mikinduri road, may lead to fatalities as well.
Stephen Mbae, 53, said the poles could be lethal if they fell, pulling power lines with them. There are two schools nearby, and the concern is they could fall on children walking past or being driven in a school bus.
He said: “There are more than 3 poles rotting away because of their age.Termites are dangerous and once they infest you can’t stop it. They need to be replaced sooner rather than later.
Residents say despite making several complaints for a long time, the department concerned and which is responsible for replacing the damaged poles is yet to take a step. “We have complained several times to the Kenya Power Meru branch to change the damaged pole but no concrete action has been taken so far”, pointed out Jane Gacheri a resident of Thimangiri.
