Why Kenyan universities could be charged if they increase fees
Kenyan Universities could now face legal charges if they increase students’ fees.
University Fund Chief Executive Officer Geoffery Monari has said universities have signed an MOU with the University Funds based on the fees they charge to prevent fee increments in the institutions.
He said if any university breaches the MOU, the agreement will be revoked and the institution charged.
“Universities have signed MOUs with us based on the fees they charge. If they increase fees, then the MOU will be revoked and they will be charged,” Geoffrey Monari said.
Monari further asserted that every student placed in institutions by Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) who applies for funding will get loans and scholarships.
“There’s no student who will miss funding under the new funding model.”
This comes amidst claims that parents would have to dig deeper into their pockets due to the government’s new funding model for students selected for university placement through KUCCPS.
President Ruto announced on May 4 that the new funding model will be beneficial to needy students.
According to the President, learners from low-income families who enroll in institutions will be eligible for government loans of up to 40 percent and scholarships of up to 53 percent.
The President said that only seven percent of the expense of their university education will be covered by their homes.
“Those joining TVETs will receive Government scholarships up to a maximum of 50 percent and 30 percent in loans,” he noted.
