What to expect at Kasarani as Ruto is sworn in as Kenya’s fifth president

At 10 am on Tuesday, the official programme of Deputy President William Ruto’s inauguration as Kenya’s fifth President is expected to kick off with all the guests including the public having taken their seats.

Immediately after this, for the next hour, the Service Commanders of the Kenya Army, Kenya Navy and Kenya Airforce will take their positions at the dais. They will be followed by the visiting Heads of State and governments before the arrival of the Chief of Defence Forces General Robert Kibochi.

Some minutes after 11, Chief Justice Martha Koome and Chief Registrar of the Judiciary Anne Amadi as well as Supreme Court judges will arrive.

The Guard of Honour will be expected in the stadium at around 11.30am where it will take its position.

Deputy President-Elect Rigathi Gachagua accompanied by his wife Dorcas will get into the stadium followed by President-elect William Ruto and incoming First Lady Rachel Ruto, approximately 10 minutes after.

Some minutes to noon, President Uhuru Kenyatta will arrive at Kasarani to be received by General Kibochi and escorted to the ceremonial Land-Rover to enter the stadium.

After the National Anthem, Uhuru will inspect the Guard of Honour and then take his place at the Dais. Interdenominational prayers will follow as has been the practice at all public events in Kenya.

The Judiciary will then take over the programme with Amadi administering the oaths to Ruto and Gachagua with the Chief Justice as the witness. They will both take two oaths as prescribed by the Constitution.

It will be the duty of the Chief Justice to introduce Ruto and Gachagua to the public after which Uhuru is to hand over the Intruments of Power and Authority – a sword and the Constitution – to Ruto.

At this point, Uhuru’s Aide-de-Camp will swiftly move behind Ruto to signify that the country now has a new Commander-in-Chief. There will be another military officer waiting to take his position behind Uhuru.

This will be followed by the playing of the national anthem as Uhuru’s presidential standard is lowered as Ruto’s is simultaneously hoisted.

General Kibochi will hand Uhuru his presidential standard after a 21-gun salute to signify the change of guard. The Guard of Honour will march off the stadium to be followed by a session of entertainment.

All this has to be done before the 2pm deadline set by the Constitution.

The new Deputy President will invite one of the guests to make a speech on behalf of the invited dignitaries and then invite Uhuru to make his valedictory speech.

Gachagua will then deliver his first speech as Deputy President and then invite Ruto to make his inaugural address to the nation.

Uhuru will lead the exit from the stadiums and head to State House where he will receive his successor with invited guests being treated to a luncheon thereafter.
