West Pokot: CS Kindiki orders for re-opening of schools vandalised by bandits

Government has ordered for the re-opening of all schools that were vandalised by bandits and armed criminals in West Pokot County.

A total of seven schools closed a few years ago due to insecurity after bandits wrecked havoc along the border.

The government has allocated KES 100 million to restore the infrastructure in the schools like Cheptulel boys and girls, Samplomoi, Cheratek, Kases, Apollo, Takaiywa primary.

Other schools that were partially affected to be supported to resume normalcy are Kissa, Ptoh, Kases, Takaywa, Lonyanyalem, Pough primary schools and others.

Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki who spoke on Thursday at Sarmach area during a security meeting that brought together all political leaders and top security team from West Pokot county, said that the schools will be reconstructed by the Kenya Defence Forces supported by National Youth Service (NYS) officers.

“The funds will be used in the reconstruction of the institutions and the purchase of new facilities,” he said.

The CS also put on notice bandits, leaders politicising security matters and inciters threatening security in the North Rift region.

“Security operations in North Rift Valley, Upper Eastern, North Eastern, and Upper Coast regions primarily aim to silence the guns, restore law, and order and assure residents of their safety and security. Those killing women and children will be dealt with,” he said.

Prof Kindiki also asked those owning illegal firearms to surrender before the government forcefully disarms them.

“Once the armed criminals are neutralised and all firearms illegally in the hands of civilians are recovered, the government will roll out an extensive martial plan to develop these regions, through infrastructure, agriculture and education, because they are a critical pillar in Kenya’s economic growth and future,” he said.

The CS directed the establishment of Lami Nyeusi General Service Unit (GSU) Camp in Sigor Constituency and establishment of seven new Divisions and other administrative units namely Chepkobhegh, Kodich, Sekerr, Masol, Kaptabuk, MiMiskwony and Endough divisions.

“The GSU camp will be constructed at Lami Nyeusi and I warn that leader’s who had intentions of stopping the construction they won’t succeed. We shall establish more formed units in areas that are insecure and bring in specialised officers and equipment to deal with complex security threats such as banditry and terrorism,,” he said

Kindiki assured locals that the current government will stabilise security in the region, hence assured learners that all schools that were closed due to insecurity will be opened.

Area residents led by David Domungura and Maimuma Chepleting called on the government to add more National Police Reservists, put up a major security camp and determine the border boundary between West Pokot and Turkana counties.

They also called for compensation of victims affected by banditry.

Area governor Simon Kachapin and Senator Julius Murgor said he will cooperate with the national government in all peace activities citing a number of challenges as impediment to security.

Rev Murgor noted that criminals are few and they should be arrested and put behind bars.

“We need vehicles for security officers in North and Central Pokot Sub Counties. We need motorbikes for chiefs in North Pokot where there are no roads,” he said.

Other leader’s present were MPs Samuel Moroto (Kapenguria) and Titus Lotee (Kacheliba) and West Pokot Woman Representative Rael Aleutum, members of county assembly among others.
