We are open to talk about other issues but handshake, Ruto affirms amid anti-govt demos
President Ruto has said that the government is willing to hold talks with the Opposition as long as it does not involve a handshake with Azimio leader Raila Odinga.
Ruto called the opposition out for stagnating businesses and day-to-day activities with the anti-government protests, claiming that the opposition was trying to sabotage the government’s plans for the country.
“We have a credible, practical working plan to change the nation and that is why there are people who don’t want us to execute that plan. They want to hold Kenya hostage. I want to tell them that it will not work,” he said.
He urged the opposition to sort out any issues they may have with the government in different ways that would not result in any form of violence or destruction of property.
“If anyone has a problem, then handle the issues without fighting. We have no problem with holding talks as long as it involves issues affecting Kenyans,” he said.
The Head of State called on Kenyans to ensure peace in the country stating that it was every citizen’s responsibility.
“It is our collective responsibility as the people of Kenya to protect our country, to protect our democracy from violence, from anarchy, from those who want to cause loss of life and destruction of property…we must stand together against them and tell them Kenya is a democratic, peaceful country where everybody’s property and everybody’s life matters and the police must make sure that they are firm on criminals, gangs, anarchies and on all the people who want to cause mayhem,” he said.
Ruto was speaking after the commissioning of the Kericho water supply project in Ainamoi.
