(VIDEO) Students and parents affected by Finland saga pledge to hold daily demos

Both students and parents affected by the botched education program from Uasin Gishu County, which was meant to provide scholarships to Finland and Canada, have threatened to initiate daily demonstrations in Eldoret until they are reimbursed for their expenses.

They have declared that even the ongoing court case against Senator Jackson Mandago will not deter them from pursuing their demand for a refund.

“I saw the advertisements for the scholarships offered by the County and applied, but we have been consistently deceived. Therefore, we have decided to take to the streets again,” expressed one of the students.

“We are demanding our refunds, not a city. While they are pursuing their city plans for Eldoret, we are left struggling. What kind of city is that? We are ready to sleep on the streets until our money is returned,” remarked Koech, a victim of the failed Finland scholarship program.

These same parents and students had previously suspended their strike to facilitate the 10th Devolution Conference held in Eldoret.

Governor Jonathan Bii of Uasin Gishu stated in an interview with NTV that he had engaged with the affected parties and they had reached an agreement not to stage a strike until the conclusion of the conference.

The Nakuru court granted bail of Sh 500,000 to Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago and three county officials who were linked to the mismanaged scholarship scheme.

Additionally, President William Ruto pledged to provide bursaries to students impacted by the unsuccessful Finland and Canada scholarship program.

During his address to Uasin Gishu residents prior to the 10th Devolution Conference at Eldoret Sports Grounds, President Ruto assured that he would take action against those who had misappropriated funds allocated for students in the scholarship program.

“Anyone who misappropriated the funds should be prepared to reimburse the money promptly or face legal consequences,” warned Ruto.

He added that the prolonged saga, which had been making headlines for weeks, was a source of embarrassment and shame for the county that is considered the President’s stronghold.
