[VIDEO]: Police lob teargas at parents of Mukumu Girls’ school opposing cereals in school stores
Police lob teargas to disperse parents of Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls’ Secondary School; the parents oppose cereals in the school stores following the tragic deaths of several students.
They demanded that the school destroys cereals, which they claim are not fit for consumption, in the store before students resume learning next week.
The school is set to re-open on 2 May, but in phases.
The committee formed to oversee the implementation of recommendations for improved sanitation to guarantee the safety of children which is chaired by Western Regional Commissioner Irungu Macharia, agreed that Form Four students will open first on 2nd May, and undergo mandatory testing through a team of doctors that will be on the ground before they settle down.
The students will also undergo both group and individual counseling and monitoring of their health status.
A day will be skipped, then form three students will re-open. They will also go through the same process of testing, group and individual counseling. The process will be repeated for form twos and form ones.
Before they re-open, parents will be invited to the school on 29th April in a meeting that will be attended by the Cabinet Secretary for Education Ezekiel Machogu.
They will be allowed to inspect the school infrastructure that was improved and assess for themselves the safety measures put in place. They will also undergo group counseling by a team of seasoned psychologists.
The Regional Commissioner said current restructuring of the school is ongoing with the construction of a borehole, treatment of water, and preparation to replace asbestos roofing with modern iron sheets.
The Committee also reported that the public health is set to advise on how to dispose of the food items that are in the store to pave way for the purchase of a new consignment.
