(Video) Pastor Ezekiel’s lawyer laughs-off question on televangelist’s relationship with Mackenzie
A cheeky, seemingly veiling laugh, followed by “I don’t know” formed the response televangelist Ezekiel Odero’s lawyer Jared Magolo gave to journalists when asked if the preacher is related to Paul Mackenzie, the leader of the deadly cult in Shakahola.
The response comes as questions abound over what relationship exists between the two preachers who have attracted tags such as controversial and questionable, both of whose ‘ministry’ operations are in the county of Kilifi.
The questions on the relationship between the two is pegged on reports that Mackenzie sold his church to Ezekiel Odero, thereby raising eyebrows over whether the horror in Shakhola has any bearing on the operations of Ezekiel’s New Life Prayer Centre and Church.
Ezekiel was arrested Thursday morning over what Coast Regional Coordinator Rhoda Onyancha termed as “allegations of deaths at his premises and reported in morgues”.
Magolo, in a seemingly cagey response, said detectives have “nothing to catch on” presumably intimating that there is not much of a case that the police can build against the popular preacher.
Further, in a demeanor painting some sense of calm, the lawyer said detectives will release the preacher who is being probed in custody “as soon as they are done”.
Then, on the whereabouts of Pastor Ezekiel’s wife, the lawyer said, “I didn’t even know he had a wife” as he dashed into the saving grace of the privacy a vehicle waiting for him, effectively ending the interview.
The New Life Prayer Centre and Church has been shut down Thursday morning, as the televangelist was arrested in Kilifi county and booked at Police Headquarters in Mombasa.
