US champions protection of LGBTQI+ persons – Ambassador Meg Whitman
US Ambassador Meg Whitman has said the US still champions the protection of LGBTQI+ persons in Kenya despite the country’s outlawing of same-sex relationships.
Ambassador Whitman stated that she and her team met with members of the LGBTQI+ community and other stakeholders to advocate for their human rights.
She reaffirmed that the United States is committed to furthering efforts to protect LGBTQI+ people from discrimination and violence, and that it will continue to advocate for human rights and equality.
“Over the past week my team and I met with the LGBTQI+ community and stakeholders to support human rights of LGBTQI+ persons. The U.S. proudly advances efforts to protect LGBTQI+ persons from discrimination and violence and will continue to stand up for human rights & equality,” Whitman tweeted,
Following President William Ruto’s statement that LGBTQ practices will not be tolerated in Kenya, Ambassador Whitman stated just two weeks ago that her country respected Kenya’s position on gay rights.
Whitman said while touring Kajiado County that the KES 16 billion in humanitarian aid extended to Kenya during US First Lady Jill Biden’s visit was unrelated to the country’s LGBTQ rights policies.
Whitman stated that despite President Ruto’s stance on LGBTQ rights not conforming to Kenyan traditions and beliefs, Kenya and the United States have a long-standing bilateral relationship.
The debate was recently reignited when the Supreme Court upheld a lower court decision that quashed the NGO Board’s decision to deny an LGBT lobby group formal registration.
