Uhuru’s decision to withdraw police reservists blamed for recent banditry attacks
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has revealed that the recent upsurge of banditry attacks in Kenya can be attributed to former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s decision to withdraw police reservists.
During a tour of Kerio Valley on Tuesday, Kindiki claimed that the reservists were withdrawn for political reasons against President William Ruto.
The abrupt withdrawal of nearly 10,000 reservists, without any basis, has allegedly caused a loss of innocent lives and deprivation of property in the North Rift region, according to the Cabinet Secretary.
Kindiki also issued a directive to the top brass of the National Police Service to react promptly to cases of insecurity and reminded police officers to use firearms when necessary to protect themselves and the locals.
In response to the recent attacks that resulted in the deaths of two minors, the Cabinet Secretary ordered the immediate reinstatement of police reservists in Kerio Valley and other counties affected by banditry activities.
He also announced plans to recruit additional reservists to assist in quelling the threats posed by organized criminal elements.
Kindiki issued a warning to those involved in the banditry attacks, stating, “If they (criminals) think they have enough weapons, I want to assure them that I am ready to use the entire Ministry’s budget to confront them.”
The Interior Cabinet Secretary has reiterated the government’s position to restore and even increase the numbers of National Police Reservists in 14 bandit-prone counties with immediate effect.
The Kerio Valley attacks are the latest in a string of insecurity cases in different parts of the country.
Kindiki, who has been in office for barely a month, has been confronted with various insecurity cases, leading the government to adopt a range of measures in response to rising concerns.
