Uhuru outlines his achievements, congratulates and wishes Ruto success in leading Kenya

President Uhuru Kenyatta has outlined some of the achievements of his government after a meeting with president-elect William Ruto at State house in Nairobi on Monday afternoon.

The outgoing Head of State used the opportunity to congratulate Ruto and wished the fifth administration success in leading the country.

“My entire family and I join all Kenyans in wishing the very best to our next president William Ruto and extend to him our warmest congratulations for receiving the mandate from Kenyans to lead us as our fifth president,” Uhuru said.

Uhuru took a more reconciliatory tone unlike a week ago when he attacked the Supreme Court for upholding Ruto’s win in the August 9 election.

“Mr President elect, as you walk the path to your inauguration and beyond, you will be the President not just for those who voted for you but for all Kenyans,” Uhuru said.

The Monday afternoon handover meeting was seen as an ice-breaker after the two fell out ahead of the August 9 election where Uhuru supported Raila Odinga to succeed him instead of Ruto who has been his deputy for nine years now.

Uhuru said that his administration has built on the foundations set by previous presidents, specifically for Education under Daniel arap Moi and infrastructure under Mwai Kibaki.

The President said that building a nation is a continuous endeavor for whichever administration comes in place saying that this was his expectation for the Ruto administration that takes over on Tuesday.

“I hosted the incoming president, Dr. William Ruto, here at State House, Nairobi. The transition process started on August 12 and since then the doors of the State House and Office of the President have been open to the technical teams of the president-elect and my administration. The meeting today was the final step to ensuring a smooth transition,” Uhuru said.

Uhuru said that his administration had ensured that devolution was working as dictated by the Constitution to ensure that the services and resources trickle down to the lowest level in the country.
“In line with the 2010 constitution, we institutionalized devolution and forever changed the face of Kenya. Through devolution, the government is now much closer to the people,” Uhuru said.

Uhuru noted that his administration had moved to enhance the competitiveness of the country’s workforce by placing the nation on a pathway to a competency-based curriculum which institutionalizes a system that seeks to nurture creativity and innovation in students.

“My administration has reinvigorated domestic manufacturing and diversified our exports of finished products,” Uhuru added.

On infrastructure, Uhuru said that he is handing over 11,500 newly tarmacked roads.

“We hand over 11,500km of newly tarmacked roads under our administration, doubling the number of kilometres constructed from the dawn of the republic to 2013,” Uhuru said.

He noted that his administration had invested heavily in security which had helped to mute the wave of terror attacks in the country in the recent past.

“We picked up Kenya when it was the 12th largest economy in Africa, it’s now Africa’s 6th largest economy. We have almost tripled Kenya’s wealth from a GDP of 4.5 trillion in 2013 to close to 13 trillion currently,” Uhuru said.

Uhuru thanked Kenyans for their support over the period that he has been president adding that those working in government had made his work easier.

“You, the people of Kenya, have walked with me every step of the way. To you all and to all those who have served with me during my tenure as president, please accept my immense and deep gratitude,” Uhuru said.
